When should we use the following forms of the verbs “Tenses”?
1- The first form of the verb {I<s>} “Present Simple Tense”
We use the first form of the verb on talking about facts, habits or regular actions.
Ex.
a- I live in Cairo and work at New Cairo Academy.
b- Marwa spends her free time on reading and watching TV.
c- Lara prays 5 times a day
2- The second form of the verb {II} <The verb +ed> or irregular verb “Past Simple Tense”
travel --------travelled work --------worked
drink --------- drank buy ---------bought
We use the second form of the verb on talking about actions happened and ended in the past.
Ex.
a- President Nasser died in 1970
b- Last Friday I visited my uncle.
c- Amira went to Sharm Al Sheikh last summer
3- Present Perfect Tense
“have, has + P. P. {III}”
We use this form of the verb mainly on talking about actions happened and ended a short time ago, Near past.
Ex.
a- I have just finished my work.
b- Lara has just drunk a cup of tea.
c- My father has just arrived.
d-My mum has just cooked the food.
4- Present Perfect Continuous (Progressive) Tense.
“have, has + been + verb + ing”
We use this form of the verb on talking about actions started happening in the past and still running on and we would like to mention for how long.
Ex.
a- Amira has been learning English for 10 years.
b- I have been waiting for you for 30 minutes.
c- Fahd has been living in Cairo since 2002.
5- Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense
“am, is, are +verb + ing”
We use this form of the verb mainly on talking about actions happening right now.
Ex.
a- I am working now.
b- Amira is studying at the moment.
c- Look! Marwa is coming over there.
d-Listen! Dr. Mohammed is speaking.
6- Past Perfect Tense
“had + P.P.”
We use this form of the verb on talking about two actions happened in the past, one of them happened and ended first then the other happened later.
Ex.
a- The police arrested the thief who had stolen my money.
b- After Lara had played the match, she went home.
7- Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense
“was, were +verb +ing”
We use this form of the verb on talking about two actions happened in the past, one of them was running on when the other interrupted it.
a- While I was cooking, I burnt my finger.
b- Dina was working when she saw this man going out of the office.
8- Future Simple Tense.
Will + infinitive or am, is, are going to + infinitive
Ex.
Shady will travel to Alex this summer. (sure)
Hanan is going to travel to Alex this summer. (planning)
Active and Passive
a- Active voice means when the subject is very important.
The form (Subject + Verb + ……………………………..)
Ex.
Dr. Amira teaches us physics.
My mum is cooking the food in the kitchen.
Ms. Nermeen fixed the lap top yesterday.
b- Passive voice means when the object or the action is much more important than the subject.
The form (Object + verb to be +P.P. {III} + ……………..)
Ex.
English, physics, Math and chemistry are taught at our academy.
The food is being cooked right now.
The office was decorated yesterday.
The wall has just been painted.
